Thickening Equipment

Deep Cone Thickener

The deep cone thickener uses a deep conical tank and flocculant system to generate dense underflow suitable for paste backfill or tailings disposal. It receives slurry from upstream grinding or flotation and concentrates solids through quiescent settling.

Technical parameters

The machine’s steep cone angle and deep sludge compaction zone yield a non-settling paste. It is placed ahead of filtration or directly in tailings management, often integrated with a flocculant preparation plant.

The model range runs from GSN-6 to larger units. As the code number increases, tank diameter, depth and settling area grow, scaling up the thickener’s capacity. Rake arm rotation slows with size to maintain torque within design limits. Choose a model by comparing the required settling area, derived from bench-scale settling tests, with the table values.

Standard-model catalogue figures. Actual capacity, power draw and wear life shift with ore properties, feed gradation and circuit conditions. Use them to shortlist, then confirm the duty by testwork, flowsheet calculation and a written confirmation from the manufacturer.

What decides the selection

To fix a model, first characterize the feed slurry, desired underflow density and overflow clarity. Run bench-scale or pilot settling tests with the candidate flocculant to establish the solids flux curve. Confirm that the target underflow’s rheology is within the thickener’s rake torque capability and that the paste remains pumpable.
