Flotation Column

Flotation columns separate fine mineral particles by contacting slurry with a rising bubble swarm inside a tall, open tank. Feed enters partway down, tailings discharge from the bottom, and concentrate overflows at the top. They sit in the final cleaning stages of a flotation circuit.

Technical parameters

Unlike mechanically agitated cells, the column has no impeller. A sparger generates bubbles, and wash water added above the feed zone displaces entrained gangue. The quiescent environment favours high-contrast separation.

The eight model sizes are defined primarily by column diameter and height, which determine the available residence time and air-carrying capacity. Larger diameters suit higher concentrate mass pulls; taller columns provide longer bubble/particle contact. Model selection balances throughput against the required separation sharpness for the target ore.

What decides the selection

Before selecting a column, define the flotation rate constant of the value mineral, the target concentrate grade, and the acceptable loss to tailings. Laboratory or pilot testing locks in the required residence time and wash water ratio.
