A filter press is a high-pressure dewatering machine that follows thickening in a mineral processing circuit. It forces slurry against a filter cloth to produce a dry cake suitable for transport or dry stacking.

Technical parameters

This batch-process unit differs from continuous vacuum filters. It operates at higher pressures, reducing cake moisture. It is placed before final handling, critical when low residual moisture is required.

The model table spans filter area, chamber count, plate dimensions, and cake thickness. Larger area and more chambers increase the volume handled per cycle, while plate specification influences cake release and cloth life. Selection depends on required cycle time and solids loading rather than a single sizing parameter. Choose based on the desired cake dryness and the required throughput.

Parameter boundary

Standard-model catalogue figures. Actual capacity, power draw and wear life shift with ore properties, feed gradation and circuit conditions. Use them to shortlist, then confirm the duty by testwork, flowsheet calculation and a written confirmation from the manufacturer.

What decides the selection

Before selecting a filter press, an engineer must establish the slurry's solids content, particle size distribution, and the target cake moisture for the specific ore. Filtration testwork on a representative sample is essential because the dewatering behaviour varies with mineralogy. Also, define the required dry solids throughput and the available operating cycle time.
